Future Focused starts with our youngest learners
All-day kindergarten is coming to Elmhurst Community Unit School District 205 -- even earlier than planned -- thanks to the support of our community. It will be rolled out in phases starting in 2020.
After a multi-year community engagement process, we heard overwhelming community support for an all-day kindergarten (ADK) option. To ensure space in our neighborhood elementary schools and to make facility improvements throughout our school district, D205 asked voters to consider a Future Focused referendum in November 2018, which was approved by our community. The referendum will build two new schools, improve safety and security across the District, add future-ready learning spaces at all school sites, meet many other existing maintenance and infrastructure needs at all our schools, and provide the space for all-day kindergarten.
D205 is excited to announce that we will be able to start offering kindergarten even earlier than planned, as soon as the 2020-21 school year, thanks to the research and planning of the D205 Community-Based All-Day Kindergarten Committee.
All-day kindergarten: did you know?
The November 2018 referendum will build enough space in our schools to provide all-day kindergarten for our students, and the D205 Board of Education voted in May 2019 to phase-in the early implementation of all-day kindergarten. Not only will this help our youngest learners but offering this program will enhance our entire community.
All-day kindergarten can decrease the need for remedial and intervention services later in elementary school. And offering a level playing field can help narrow the achievement gap, ensuring that all students reach learning benchmarks. When at-risk students are ready for success, it helps all students in the classroom.
Investing in early childhood education not only helps our kids, but adds value to our entire community. Our neighboring cities offer all-day kindergarten; introducing it here in Elmhurst 205 will help us remain competitive.
There is strong community-wide support for our District to offer an all-day kindergarten option. Adding ADK was the top priority identified in the Focus 205 process, second only to increased STEM opportunities for students, and several surveys showed support for ADK not only among parents, but of the larger community.
Did you know that 77% of schools nationally, 67% of schools in DuPage County, and seven of eight of our top performing neighboring districts offer an all-day kindergarten option for families? Elmhurst Community Unit School District 205 is excited to soon offer this important program for our youngest learners, thanks to the support of our referendum!
What’s next for all-day kindergarten?
Half-day options will continue to be available at all D205 schools. In addition, the District will begin offering all day kindergarten as early as 2020-21, phasing in the program ahead of schedule and completing the phase-in by the start of the 2024-25 school year.
D205 hosted ADK information sessions for parents of preschoolers on September 3 and 5 to learn more about our new program and timeline.
